Salut la compagnie,
je vois qu’une expédition se prépare… comme je suis étudiant en géographie-géologie-volcano-glacio actuellement sur place en erasmus, voici des précisions sur les événements à venir.
Un tremor de basse fréquence à environ 2,2km de profondeur sous le glacier a apparemment débuté cette nuit. Le risque d’éruption grandit férocement. Ca peut péter très rapidement..
Donc, si ça se déclenche d’ici quelques jours / semaines, vous ne pourrez de toute évidence plus trop tenir compte des endroits spécifiques pour traverser les rivières si ces endroits sont sur le chemin du jökuhlhaup qui se produira. Vous devrez donc ouvrir sans doute une nouvelle voie, ce qui peut être beaucoup plus dangereux… bonne chance et surtout prudence. Si ça n’a vraiment pas claqué d’ici août et que ça continue de pousser, l’itinéraire sera sans doute à modifier, vous vous en doutez.
Ah, n’oubliez pas un truc pour chasser moucherons et moustiques dans les zones humides, parce qu’en été ça va donner!
Bon tout ça parait bien négatif, mais l’islande, c’est quand même exceptionnel!

La question c’est surtout s’il ne s’est rien passé quand on arrive sur place, et que la situation ressemble à celle actuelle, il va falloir sérieursement revoir notre route. Mais bon, quelques personnes parlent de stratovolcan à tendance explosive… sans psychoter façon StHelens, ça fait quand même peur. Le lac Myvatn à l’air pas trop mal finalement

Are you talking about the graph with a green/red line ? It’s fine viewed from here. May be you have a caching issue with your browser/proxy ?
The rolling graphs with IMO data have been frozen for the eruption date. I don’t think that seismic activity has any interest for these graphs past the eruption date (and the movie is getting huge too !).

I was actually referring to the movie of the seismic data (superimposed upon the topo map). Iceland Meteo doesn’t cache its plots… and your movie has been truly the •only* way to plot the movement of magma. It is of tremendous interest to me (and most likely other people, as well).
Every time there is a pre-eruptive phase, the magma starts a series of « exploratory » pushes, and then « picks » a spot which offers the least resistance. The ridge-line fissure partially sealed (because the basalts hardened, is my guess) and when pressure from below increased, the next push found an exploit that had been touched under before, but not yet broken open… and erupted without seeming any warning. Your timelapse, however, would have betrayed the prior tentative pushes into that spur of the mountain.
Perhaps you can cache and link to the existing movie, and make a new one from March 20 to the present?
Have you stored the newer plots as they arrived from Met Iceland? I can’t emphasize enough how much I learn by watching (and re-watching) the movie for clues about magma history and « weak spots. »

A quick question (and blog suggestion for you). Erik Klemetti has over-posted his own blog a number of times… so he’s running about six consecutive blogs on Eyjafjallajökull. You may wish to change your link (above) to simply – http://scienceblogs.com/eruptions/ (He put up a new blog today, for instance.)
People quickly forget the progress of this – and I still of course would welcome a new movie showing how the magma has « explored » the upper channels in the mountain. Iceland Met has released a 3-D chart but ignored all earthquakes below a 2.0, so the upper fissures are mostly left out (as they were under less pressure to open, it meant lower magnitude quakes to « break » into them). A new time-lapse movie from the 20th onward would show those channel, so I still encourage you.
My quick question is – as a mathematician, does your « un-smoothed » EVENTS (red) line going back into the past, have enough samples to indicate an averaged periodicity?
The volcano has gone quiet again, but I’m willing to bet it will re-erupt in about 20-30 hours… whatever is that already established period. What do you detect the period to be?

About the movie, you have mail !
The unsmoothed events line (i.e. the red line you get when you click the graph) has samples going back to the 2008-12-29. So charting something over a longer period is quite easy.
I’ve packed the raw data (22k EQ) and I’ll send you the address.

Great work Michel. My spreadsheet software has been knocked out by a recent OS install, and must be put back in properly from install disks. In the meantime, Erik and others asked if they too could have access to the data you sent me… and I’m possibly heading out on a two-day car trip. They believe they can come up with the same patterns of periodicity as I suspect, and stay ahead of this volcano.
So you may be hearing from them.

Michel – I have had limited Internet access for the past five days – was supposed to go to Ireland on Friday for my annual research trip as you know. Now my schedule is being re-directed and my service is down as well because I was to be away.
I have a request which may be simple. You may recall – before you went on your trip – I asked…could you expand the territory of the depth of events v. position map? The quakes (magma movement) have come right up to the margins in two directions and we are missing the full picture. I had suggested new coordinates for outer margins and you thought that could be easily done, because the programming had been finished and the new data would just « jump into place. » Can you still do that?
Now… here is the harder part. The display is difficult for me to interpret because it is a bit « counter-intuitive. » I have struggled with it. « Up » is « down » (the deepest events are on top, and the shallowest events are to the bottom).
Can you ask your graphing software to reverse (mirror) the display? So « up » (0-5km) is up, and « down » (20-25 km) is down? Same colours… colours are fine – it makes sense that closer to centre of earth is hotter.
But also, for clarity, the zero field of « no events » should be neutral grey or white (yes?) instead of the same purple colour as 0-5km depth quakes… that makes shallow quakes disappear (or the opposite, makes it appear as if there are shallow quakes by colour indication, where there are in fact none).
These are the sort of feedback I believe you requested. I hope you find this helpful.
About the animation map… I love it on Firefox. I played with the controls. The framerate of 5 and magnitude factor of 3 is what I’m using at the moment for analysis… I’m going to use it to run some questions directly off-blog to Erik Klemetti. I believe we should be really worried about Eyjafjallajökull right now – my guess seems to be confirmed by what I see here.
Two questions –
First – can you run the map up to the present day please? It seems to stop with the eruption on the 15th. am still trying to stay ahead of worse disasters. I was able to predict (on the blog) the time (within 12 hours) and the location (within 800 metres) of the present massive eruption… and only Jón and I apparently saw it coming. But looking back analysis is only good (from my point of view) to prevent harm in the future… and I sense a worst problem possibly on the horizon, so I must see what it is doing up to the present day even if it seems like next to nothing. The last quake was a surface quake at the first eruption site, for instance – and there was no reason for it – there should have been no pressure there at all.
Second – do the colours of the circles correspond with depth as on the depth-location mapping? (Ie. – does red indicate deep and blue/purple indicate shallow?) Magnitude = size I understand. What is colour?

j’apprécie beaucoup votre site très riche en infos sur l’activité volcanique actuelle. Guide en Islande depuis fort longtemps j’ai pas mal arpenté les lieux de votre prochaine aventure. Il me semble évident que la partie qui va d’Emstrur à Skogar via Thorsmörk n’est plus du tout possible à l’heure actuelle (of course) et de même en été si cela reste comme ça. Je ne sais pas si Les passerelles randos ont été emporté sur la Markarfjlot et la piste dévastée (et pas question de passer à gué). Sur les photos du Gigjökull on voit bien la vidange du lac et l’ouverture de la passe en moraine mais ceci est en aval.

De retour de ma Via Alpina italiennne suivie de quelques jours plus cool entre Lac Majeur et Vérone, j’ai pris connaissance ce matin de vos posts , en bloc, comme une bouffée d’air frais, une suite insolite et si différente à ma propre itinérance. Photos superbes de paysages incontestablement magnifiques qui prolongent le rêve et donnent envie de refaire le sac…
J’attends la suite. Je vais suivre avec attention votre progression.
Pour les accents qui manquent dans les textes, pas d’inquiétude. Free me facilite considérablement la tâche. En effet, je ne vois vraiment pas où est la difficulté quand je lis « La Syðriófæra, ou la malédiction des accents », la prononciation va de soi !
Que j’envie vos festins, pensés et préparés avec tant de minutie et de professionnalisme. Pour moi, ça a été l’enfer: Imaginez plûtot les savoureux minestrone, les roboratives assiettées de pasta au pesto, les généreuses pizze, les cappucini et les quelques rasades de génépy ou grappa ! Pouvaient-ils espérer rivaliser avec les granulés, les mueslis et l’alcool de patates ! Buon appetito.
